Artists in Community

Tactile Arts has a rich tradition of working with community. Many of our artists continue this tradition today, working with community groups in Darwin and around the NT.

In March 2013, Janie Andrews spent 2 weeks working with local artists and high school students from West Arnhem College in Gunbalanya to create mosaic panels for the new Child and Family Centre in Gunbalanya (being built as we speak!).

Janie worked with the students to create the designs for the panels. Local artists then taught them traditional rarrk painting technique using underglazes on clay.

Janie demonstrated clay panel making techniques, shaping and cutting the clay with the artists and students. She then took these decorated pieces to Tactile Arts to fire and returned with all the pieces (intact!……..bear in mind bumpy roads and light aircraft landings!) to piece the mosaics together with the artists and students back in Gunbalanya.
